A lifelong artist and potter, Connie Collins discovered her love for clay on a whim when she took a summer school pottery class taught by a master potter. That spontaneous decision shaped her creative journey and launched a multi-generational passion for ceramics.
Connie earned her degree in art from California State University, Fullerton, and in 1980, alongside her husband Bob, she founded Mountain Mud Company. What began as a humble venture soon grew into a family tradition, with all 7 of their children and now grandchildren joining in the joyful, muddy work of crafting pottery by hand.
From the Bay Area to Mariposa, Connie has brought her custom pieces to craft shows and community events, sharing not only her beautiful work but her heart. Her creations range from whimsical critters and functional pieces like French butter dishes and ramen bowls to cherished keepsakes that carry the warmth of handmade tradition.
Now teaching others through her “Make a Critter” class at Made in Mariposa, Connie gently guides students of all ages in shaping clay into charming animals through simple, joyful steps. Compassionate, creative, and deeply rooted in her community, Connie is proud to be part of a legacy—three generations of potters creating art that brings people together.
Made in Mariposa (MiM) consists of local producers of goods, products, and art located in Mariposa, California.
MiM was created in 2016 with the help of a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). MiM was originally managed by the Mariposa Chamber of Commerce and was located at the Visitors Center.
In 2022, MiM members took over management and established MiM as a 501(c)3 nonprofit. In May 2023 the MiM store moved to its present location and is staffed by unpaid volunteers.
To bring awareness and demand for the high-quality manufactured goods, arts, and agricultural produce of Mariposa County, while reflecting regional values and principles of stewardship, conservation, and fair labor practices, for the economic benefit of local industry.
